Royal Chintz China, first known as Grimwades Ltd., is now formally known as Royal Winton. Royal Chintz China has long been known as the producer of beautifully designed chintz patterns.
The term chintz comes from a 17th century Indian word, chint, which means fabric that is brightly and broadly printed. Explorers from England, Portugal, Spain and Italy brought these chintz patterns back from India after their new world explorations. The fabrics they discovered were thickly woven and had bird and floral designs in many bright colors. These precursors to Royal Chintz China became vastly popular in Europe.
In the 1920’s Sydney and Leonard Grimwade, British brothers, developed mass production and manufacturing processes for the creation of chintz china. They bought out a porcelain factory in Staffordshire England and began what was to become Royal Chintz China. Leonard, a former lithographer, invented a transferring process called duplex lithography as well as his Climax kiln.
Both of these had a positive effect on the Royal Chintz china manufacture as well as the entire dinnerware industry as a whole. Thanks to Grimwade Royal Chintz china could now be manufactured quickly, easily and continually. Mass production of royal chintz china had Leonard Grimwade to thank.
The first Royal Chintz china pattern released by the brothers Grimwade was the Marguerite, named after Leonard’s wife’s pillow stitch pattern. Soon after its release Grimwades Ltd. Became Royal Winton Chintz China. 80 patterns total were then designed, some created by simply reversing the coloring of the background and the pattern’s foreground colors.
In 1993, Spencer Hammer and Associates took over the Royal Winton Chintz china firm, recreating some of its old chintz china patterns.

Tisserand’s Toils for Treatments
Tisserand aromatherapy is named for Robert Tisserand, who is internationally known as the pioneer of aromatherapy. Beginning his therapy practice in 1969, Tisserand discovered aromatherapy in 1974. Tisserand aromatherapy was the first company that marketed essential oils and products. Tisserand wrote the first English language book on aromatherapy in 1977. Tisserand’s book, The Art of Aromatherapy, was translated into nine other languages.
Robert Tisserand believed fervently in the use of aromatherapy as a medicinal complement to standard medications. A member of the International Journal of Armotherapy’s editorial committee, Tisserand founded the journal in 1988 and he edited its issues for 12 years. He works very closely with herbal enthusiasts and physicians alike, and follows all scientific research on essential oils as it is published.
Tisserand’s aromatherapy interests are educational as well. He was one of the founders of many aromatherapy organizations, and serves as primary executive and founder of the Tisserand Institute of London. Robert Tisserand has given lectures all over the world, and has held three internationally attended conferences on aromatherapy, all held in the UK. He has also been interviewed about aromatherapy countless times, by print, television and radio reporters.
Tisserand hasn’t given up the hands-on functions of creating his company’s products, however. He formulates its blends of essential oils, and defines the herbal extracts that are part of each aromatherapy oil product.
Tisserand’s most recent publication is called Essential Oil Safety. It is the first definitive aromatherapy reference book to help those in the industry safely use and applied the more than 300 essential oils required for the creation of aromatherapy products.

Trained by Thomas
Hornby Thomas is a name known to train collectors. The name Hornby is so well known that it’s come to be a synonym for 00 gauge model train sets. Thomas and Sons is one of six Hornby railway collections. The others are Harry Potter, steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, rolling freight stock and rolling passenger stock.
The first Hornby Thomas and Sons train set to be produced for commercial sale was the adorable Percy the Small Engine train character. It was released in 1967 as part of a train set by Meccano.
Developed in response to its popularity on the children’s TV show, Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, this talking steam engine also was part of a group of books called The Railway Series, written by father and son Wilbert and Christopher Awdry.
Hornby Thomas’s Percy the living steam engine lives on the pretend island of Sodor with many other trains that include Gordon the Big Engine, Thomas the Tank Engine and Henry the Green Engine. Percy, number 6 engine, is the smallest of the island’s engine inhabitants and the most outspoken.
The Fat Controller brought this tiny Hornby Thomas engine to Sodor to help resolve a train engine strike on the island. Initially having to endure bullying from the bigger engines, Percy finally showed his capabilities and earned their respect. The Fat Controller finally promoted Percy to hauling goods on the important Hornby Thomas branch line. The headstrong Thomas is one of Percy’s best train friends, as is the beloved Toby the Tram engine.
The first appearance of these fictional Hornby Thomas characters in book form was in 1950. Percy made his first television appearance in the Hornby Thomas TV series Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends in 1985.

Wooden You Like These Toys?
Wooden toys have been popular for many centuries. In fact, archeologists discovered wooden horses and toy chariots, jointed dolls made of wood, carved wooden crocodiles with moving jaws and other toys that children as far back as 1100 BC played with. Roman children, Egyptian children and Grecian children of old all played with wooden toys.
In the 1500’s German premiered toy manufacture for the public, hiring crafters to create wooden toys and sales people to travel ever part of Europe selling these wooden toys. Children of European royalty had customized wooden toys sent from Germany to commemorate events such as anniversaries and birthdays.
19th century children played with elaborate wooden toys, such as large theaters and doll houses with gaudy and ornate decorations. Wooden soldiers and jack in the boxes were gaily painted for these children’s delight. Wooden box shaped trains were popular too, as were their grooved train tracks made of wood.
The Swedish Brio firm created all sorts of wooden toys but is best known for its wooden toy trains. Each year Brio manufactures nearly four million wooden trains, trucks and cars for various parts of the globe. In fact, Ford Motor Company doesn’t deliver as many vehicles to the U.S. as does Brio.
While wooden toys, a more costly and less flexible product than the newer plastic play things, are less popular than they once were, they still have their followers, especially with teachers. A few large wooden toy manufacturers flourish or at least hold their own, but many smaller crafters and mom and pop enterprises flourish with wooden toys that fit every budget and customized need.
Early childhood education experts tout the benefits of wooden toys, especially for young special needs children, who thrive on the sensory benefits of wooden toys.

Getting the Skinny on Skin Care
Dermalogica skincare system was developed by researchers of the International Dermal Institute. These professionals believe that good skincare should be a no-nonsense Dermalogica approach, without luxury or pampering. Distributed in more than 40 countries, Dermalogica skincare is not focused on pretty packaging but rather on results.
Dermalogica skincare began in 1986. The International Dermal Institute, a skincare training school at the postgraduate level, was the catalyst. Researchers at the educational facility shocked the skincare world with Dermaologica’s refusal to use any artificial colors, synthetic fragrance, alcohol, mineral oil or lanolin. These products were inexpensive commonly used skincare products, but actually caused more skin problems than they resolved. Dermalogica’s founders also insisted that its skincare professionals meet top levels of expertise and training. They were committed to offering reliable skincare consultations for consumers without Dermalogica skincare bowing to fads and hype.
Dermalogica skincare executives emphasize their commitment to great skincare products in straight forward, no-frills packaging. They focus always on education about skin care and formulation of new effective products.
Primary ingredients of Dermalogica skincare products are pure essential and natural oils and extracts, calming agents that are naturally purifying. Some of these are balm mint, green clay, lactic and salicylic acids, fruit enzymes and exfoliating rice bran. All Dermalogica skincare products are non-comedogenic.
Committed to being cruelty free, Dermalogica skincare is not tested on animals ever. All ingredients are also safe for the environment and its packaging can be recycled. Dermalogica’s skincare products are not sold online, at least not by Dermalogica directly. The firm is committed to offering individual results and encourages consumers to talk with the company’s skin care therapists for the products that will best help the individual’s unique skincare needs.

Unique Clinique
Clinique is a subsidiary of Estee Lauder, established in 1968. The mission of the Clinique brand is to meet skin care needs of each individual. Clinique dermatologists and chemists came up with a three step formula of caring for skin by first cleansing, then toning and finally moisturizing. The basic Clinique assumption is that cleanliness and hygienic maintenance as the basic premise to care for every skin condition. All Clinique problems are tested to resist allergic reactions and contain no fragrances.
Each Clinique customer who stops at the cosmetics counter of the department store offering Clinique will be tested scientifically to determine skin type, then given a customized treatment program. This Clinique method will take into account the skin type, facial type, lip type, eye color and several other facial attributes.
Clinique cleansers are gentle, as is it eye make up remover. Instead of removing makeup with a thin solvent, Clinique has devised a creamy and rich lotion that spreads on the eyes evenly and removes all signs of eye makeup quickly.
Clinique’s Comforting Cream Cleanser is fast acting as well, and is rich enough to protect delicate and dry skin. Its cleansing agents also refresh oily skin. Its menthol ingredients loosen and remove dead skin cells while they get rid of the day’s dirt and excess oil. Clinique also offers a gel cleanser especially designed for oily skin to dislodge dirt and makeup.
Clinique introduced its Anti-gravity Firming Lift Cream in October 2000 which helps the rebuilding of skin’s aging epidermis, inhibits the breakdown of the skin’s protective layers and gives skin cells longer healthier life.
Clinique products are now sold in more than 80 countries.

Preserved by Potter
Beatrix Potter, creator of Peter Rabbit, was born in Victorian England in 1866, in the part of London known as Kensington. A typical family of that era, the Potters had a large home and many servants. Beatrix had her own nurse, and spent many hours alone learning reading, writing, art and music from her governess. Her brother Bernard, 6 years younger, was sent away for his schooling.
Summer holidays were spent in Scotland and its lake areas each year. She and her brother explored the fields and the woods, catching and taming wild animals and painting and sketching all they came upon. Beatrix Potter developed her love of nature as a result of these Scotland summers.
One summer’s visit to Windermere Beatrix Potter and brother Bernard befriended Canon Rawnsley, the local vicar. Disturbed by tourism and industrialization’s effect on the Lake District’s natural beauty, the vicar had a great deal of influence on Beatrix’s life long mission of preserving nature and the countryside.
Beatrix and Bertram Potter amassed together quite a collection of animals as pets for their schoolroom. All at the same time their classroom housed a green frog, a few water newts, two lizards, a snake, a rabbit and a tortoise.
Beatrix Potter’s favorite pet was her first rabbit, which she named Benjamin Bunny.
Engaged in her early adulthood to Norman Warner, a local publisher, Beatrix Potter was devastated by his untimely death before their wedding. She was to remain single until age 47, when she married an attorney and resident of her beloved Scotland lake district. His name was William Heelis. Beatrix Potter dedicated these later years to Lake District ecological preservation. She left a large part of her estate to The National Trust, requiring her land’s preservation as a living landscape.

A Sharp Cure
Acupuncture is a form of healing so ancient that it precedes recorded history. Rooted in China’s philosophy of Taoism, acupuncture enthusiasts more than 8000 years ago would meditate and realize an energy flow a result. They focused on humanity’s relationship with the universe and nature. The backbone of Chinese theories of medicine are natural and meditative, with early healer Fu His developing the theory of triplicity and the trigrams and hexagrams of the Book of Change known as I-Ching. This book shaped China’s thinking for years and was the precursor to the prevalence of acupuncture.
During what was known in China as the New Stone Age from 4000 to 10,000 years ago, the stone knives that had previously been used for medical treatments were revised, becoming fine needles. These acupuncture instruments were called bian stone, the translation of which means stone with sharp edge for the treatment of disease.
During the Yellow Emperor, or Huang Di, period of 2697-2597 BC acupuncture practices were documented as the first Chinese medical books.
Along with the human relationship with nature and the world, the medical care publication talked about acupuncture and other natural processes as they related to pathology, diagnosis, prevention, treatment, physiology and anatomy.
Acupuncture was used extensively during China’s Long March of 1934 and 1935, helping to keep Chinese soldiers healthy despite the harsh weather and living conditions. In 1950, under the direction of Chairman Mao, acupuncture earned common acceptance throughout the entire medical community in the country.
Since the 1970’s acupuncture has played an important part in medical care in China.
